Digital Privacy

It all starts with a server

If you’re online, you are using a server. In most cases, that server is owned by another person or company. Your precious data can get scattered across the globe without your knowledge.
But setting up your own server helps minimise the spread of your information. Here’s how we go about it:

Firstly, we set up the right server in your office or home (or one of our secure online options).

Secondly, we configure your entire network, allowing only the services which are truly needed to access the internet.

Thirdly, your server can act as your very own virtual private network (VPN) — enjoy an encrypted connection to the internet. We’ll set that up for you.

And then? Well, let’s stop your internet service provider (ISP) from seeing your domain name system (DNS*) requests. Some additional DNS settings add yet another layer of encryption.
We can also set up alternative cloud systems, such as Dropbox or Google Drive, and any other service you need - with your digital privacy front and centre.

What about my desktop, mobile phone, and other devices?

When you use your devices, a lot of unwanted digital traffic is already blocked by your private server. But it is still vital to modify each device so that they connect to your server safely.
Applications like browsers, email services, games, online banking - and plenty more - collect as much information from your device as possible. (There’s money to be made from your personal data and they try hard to gather it all).
Fine-tuning of the connection and privacy settings of your devices should be completed regularly. We can help you set up a data-leak minimisation schedule, or we can do it for you.

Got an Android device?

1. For the applications you simply can’t do without, deny them access to the internet via a good firewall. It helps protect your data. Let us set it up for you.
2. If you must give third-party applications (like games and services) personal information, give them fake data. We’ll help you create a fake contact list, call logs, location logs, messages, photos and video, clipboard cuttings — the whole works.
3. Ensure you have effective DNS, TOR, and VPN set up. We’ll make sure it’s all working correctly.
4. We can even de-Google your device for you, so that only your company-specific or family-specific applications are running.

* DNS requests

The Domain Name System (DNS) is the phonebook of the internet. You and I access information online through domain names, like google.com or techsaviours.nz but web browsers interact through Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. DNS translates domain names to IP addresses so that browsers can load the internet resources (the pages and files) you’re looking for.

But each device connected to the internet has a unique IP address which other machines use to find the device. DNS servers eliminate the need for us to memorize IP addresses — such as 192.168.1.1 (in IPv4) — or the newer (and more complex) alphanumeric IP addresses, such as 2400:cb00:2048:1::c629:d7a2 (in IPv6).

The update support of the manufacturers usually does not last longer than 2 years *. For longer support you need special access ** to your smartphone. At least for the security updates.
It is also possible to increase security with a firewall (iptables) and much much more.
